Is it ok to ask for money as a wedding gift?

Isn’t money an awkward topic?

I know it can feel a little uncomfortable asking for money as a wedding gift instead of having a traditional gift list.

Personally, I love it when me and my hubby are invited to a wedding and the couple have asked for money – because all I have to do is buy (or make) a lovely card and pop a cheque in there. Simples!

The fact is, most couples these days already have a home together, so it makes sense to contribute to something bigger like your honeymoon. Or, in my case, some beautiful dining room furniture, which I’m sat at as I write this email to you 🙂

So, how to ask for money without sounding cheeky or feeling rude?

Light-hearted ditties are a great way to relieve the tension on your side and leave your guests smiling.

Try one of these:

More than just kisses so far we’ve shared
Our home has been made with love and with care
Most things we need we’ve already got
And in our home we can’t fit a lot!

We have our dishes and towels for two
We have pots and pans and oven mitts too
So what do you get for a bride and a groom
Whose home is complete in every room?

To save you shopping, sit back and rest
A gift of currency is our request
Don’t go over board or rob any banks!
Any little thing will make us smile with thanks

So now that we’ve saved you all the fuss
It would be appreciated if you would
Come and celebrate with us!

We really hope that you can join us
On our special day
You’ll make our memories complete
In every single way
We do not have a gift list
And we know you’ll understand
Our house and contents are complete
With pots and plates and pans
But should you really want to give
And celebrate this way
Then we would appreciate your help
To send us on our way
A contribution to our honeymoon
In a land quite far away
But most importantly, we request,
You come to our wedding as our guest
To share with us our special day
And have some fun along the way

We’re sending you this invitation
In hope you’ll join our celebration.
But if giving a gift is your intention;
May we take this chance to mention:

Although we’re not yet Mr and Mrs
We do already have our plates and dishes,
So rather than something we’ve already got
We’d appreciate funds for our honeymoon pot.

But most of all, what we request-
You enjoy the day as our wedding guest!

We’ve been together for a few years
And have a lovely home,
There aren’t too many items
We don’t already own.
So please don’t be offended
Please don’t think we’re brash,
But if your thoughts were on a present
We’d much prefer the cash.
Yet nothing could be better
We would just like to say,
That your presence is all we ask
To make our perfect Wedding Day.

Do feel free to copy these as they are, or adapt them to suit you.

Remember: many people will be relieved you’ve asked for money rather than a gift!
