Destination Weddings – What to Include in Your Invitations

Your destination wedding invitation wording can be as different and unique as you want it be – don’t be afraid to send something that will really get your guests excited! – however there is key information your invitations should definitely include:

The destination

Goes without saying but obviously you need to include the destination part of your destination wedding on your invitations! Tell your guests exactly where in the world they’re going and have the country and city or town printed clearly.

The wedding venue

Now that they know where they’ll be jet setting off to, you can clarify the finer details. As with standard wedding invitations, you’ll want to ensure your guests know the exact address of your venue and because it isn’t local take extra care and list its name and full address so that it’s easy for them to track down online.

The wedding date

You don’t want anybody missing your destination wedding thanks to any misinformation about dates! Include the specific day month and year of your celebration so that everyone books the right time off work if needed.

To ensure complete clarity skip the all-numeral style (e.g. 10/10/2020) and fully write out the date of the wedding (i.e. Saturday, October 14, 2023, or Saturday the Fourteenth of October 2023).

The time

Include the specific hour, followed by a.m. or p.m., or use the 24-hour clock so that no one shows up too early or too late.

The RSVP deadline

The logistics of a destination wedding can be a little bit more trickier so it helps to have your final numbers well in advance, so make sure you list the RSVP deadline clearly on your invitations. Keep in mind the recommended cut-off for an overseas wedding is typically longer than that of a standard wedding – check with your key vendors / wedding planner in advance of printing.

Feel free to get creative with the wording on your RSVP card to match the tone and style of your wedding. Here are a few examples to help:

  • My/our bags are packed!
  • I can’t wait to get my toes in the sand!
  • We will see you in the mountains!
  • We will see you on the slopes!

And for guests who can’t make it:

  • Sorry to miss it! I’ll/we’ll celebrate in spirit.
  • Regretfully, I will celebrate from afar.
  • We will toast you from a distance.

In addition to the key information, add a little extra personality to your invitation with some playful wording. Here’s some examples:

  • Pack your bags, book your flights, and join us in Santorini for a few romantic nights…
  • Daniel and Emma invite you to join them as they begin their greatest adventure….
  • Tom and Harriet invite you to Cancun, Mexico to soak up the sun and celebrate their wedding!
  • Rachel and Sarah are embarking on the journey of a lifetime! Please join them…

Keep the main invitation wording simple and share any additional information on one or two information cards instead. Information inserts are the perfect way to highlight need-to-know details without sacrificing the aesthetic and flow of your invitation wording.

Make sure your guests have all the necessary information about:

Travel & accommodation: Which resort or hotel should they book, and are there blocked rooms for reservations? Which airport(s) are recommended to fly into? Will they need to find their own rental car, or will a shuttle/cab be provided?

Additional Events: Maybe you’ve planned a cocktail reception, a farewell brunch, or simply a few fun outings during your time together. Make sure anything “organised” is detailed so all your guests feel included and prepared.

Attire: Are heels ok or would flats / flipflops be more suitable? Are suits and ties expected or is it a little less informal? You want your guests to be comfortable and prepared for the terrain / weather, especially if you’re having an outdoor wedding.

Packing Essentials: Let your guests know about anything else they should bring, especially for fun outings. Think swimwear, sunscreen, hiking clothes/shoes, etc.

Any of our invitations can be adapted for a destination wedding – we don’t enforce wording templates so you can use whatever wording you want to on your choice of invitation – and if you have an image of the venue and want to include that in the invitation design, we can do that (the image would need to be a suitable format and high enough quality).
