If I could have my wedding day again – which I would absolutely love to do, because it’s so worth all the planning – I would, without a doubt, go for a rustic, shabby-chic theme.

I’m a country girl these days and I just love settings that are all about the rustic feel: barn conversions, marquees, country houses, gardens and tipis. Bring the outside in with this fabulous theme or choose an outside setting and go the whole hog. With an actual hog for your sumptuous wedding hog roast feast!

You can create the DIY look and feel without spending all your time on it or busting your budget.

So, to start the ball rolling, I have to talk about your invitations. Not just because they’re my domain, but because they’ll be the first clue as to your theme. When your guests receive your invitation, you want them to think, “Wow, this is going to be a great day!”

Rustic themed weddings are all about natural textures and layers – think different wood textures, shades of greenery and flowing layers of natural material. Add things like burlap, raffia and recycled card stock into the mix and you’re really creating a rustic and shabby chic look and feel. You don’t have to abandon vibrant colours entirely – use the bridesmaid dresses as your accent colour, or your flowers as inspiration to add bright touches. Earthy, bold colours work beautifully in a rustic theme – think burnt oranges, coppers and shades of rust.

We have a whole section of rustic-themed invitations which you can choose to DIY and make yourself, you can find them here. Remember: assembly is incredibly simple. You’ll get a kit, so you don’t have to do the whole thing from scratch.
